are you letting the cake cool long enough? if the cake's still too hot before you start frosting it, the frosting melts and slides off the cake, so i think that could be the problem.

well ive never heard of a frosting that has slid of the cake so if you put already a little and it slid off with the rest of the froting you could add a little powdered sugar or plain sugar or a little flour mix and it should stiff up a little.
Refrigerator it.
