Is there a secret to making homemade whip cream for my pumpkin pie?

Basically, its simple. Just Heavy Whipping Cream and Confectioners Sugar. Whip it until it stands up on it's own in 'peaks'. (whip it too far and it turns into butter).

Secrets.

1) COLD. Homemade whip cream doesn't last very long. the colder it stays, the longer it will stay 'whipped'. This can be assisted using a Cold, METAL bowl to whip/store it in and Cold beaters for the mixer. You can put both in the freezer for about 20-30 minutes before making it. Keep it in the fridge if it's not being used.

2) Flavors. You can really put anything in it to add a little flavor... A teaspoon of vanilla extract, a teaspoon of grenadine, some shaved chocolate, etc... since you're using it for pumpkin pie, maybe add some nutmeg and/or cinnamon. Homemade whipped cream leaves the canned, and god forbid, bucket stuff in the dust (being actually whipped and cream), and takes less than five minutes to make. The trick: a cold bowl, clean beaters, and a ratio of about 1 cup of heavy cream to 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar, whipped until it holds soft peaks. Start low, so you don鈥檛 splash yourself when it is still liquid. Add a splash of flavoring (vanilla, almond or a liqueur) at the end for extra awesomeness.

Here is a whip cream recipe that i use all the time

INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)

1 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar

DIRECTIONS

In a large bowl, whip cream until stiff peaks are just about to form. Beat in vanilla and sugar until peaks form. Make sure not to over-beat, cream will then become lumpy and butter-like.

hope this helps!
easy:

this is an all natural way

take heavy cream and a clean jar

shake it for a long time, about 20 min hard.

in time, it will be somewhat less liquidey.

This is whipped cream.

If you keep going, it will be butter.

SO MAKE THE HOME-MADE, ALL NATURAL CHOICE.
Whipped cream is just that... literally, just cream that's been whipped with a mixer at a very high speed. One ingredient, and about five minutes of mixing.
