Why does the ice cream have to be on salt of it to freeze?

In making home-made ice cream the container of cream mixture which is to be frozen is placed in a container of salted ice. If there is not salt used, the cream will not freeze. Explain why the salt is necessary for the cream mixture to freeze. Why does the ice cream have to be on salt of it to freeze?
Salt lowers the freezing temperature of water so that the water around the ice cream container can be below 32 degrees. Since cream (and especially cream with a ton of sugar) also freezes below 32F, ice alone will not work.
