How can I make yummy ice cream from scratch at home, without the use of an ice cream maker?

And if I were to throw in some nuts..or fruits like strawberries, chocolate pieces..how do I go about doing so? All suggestions are welcome :)How can I make yummy ice cream from scratch at home, without the use of an ice cream maker?
OK here's an old recipe we made in home-ec back in high school.

Mint Chip Ice Cream:

1 cup whipping cream

1/2 cup (7oz) sweetened condensed milk

1 TBSP water

1/8 tsp mint extract

1-2 drops green food coloring

1/2 cup (3oz) semi sweet chocolate chips

1.) Pour whipping cream into a medium mixing bowl. Beat with an electric mixer until peaks form when the beaters are lifted; set aside.

2.) In a large mixing bowl, combine milk, water, extract, and food coloring with a whisk.

3.) Fold in whipping cream with a rubber spatula.

4.) Line a loaf pan with plastic wrap. Gently pour your ice cream mixture into the loaf pan. Top with chocolate chips, cover with more plastic wrap, and place in the freezer until frozen. (The chocolate chips will slowly sink because they are heavier than the ice cream mixture.)

To remove the ice cream from the loaf pan, just flip it over and it should come out with a little bit of tugging on the wrap.

Obviously you can use different flavors of extracts and add different things (like fruit) to get different flavors of ice cream. How can I make yummy ice cream from scratch at home, without the use of an ice cream maker?
We learned to do this in fourth grade, and it actually yielded passable results.

Ingredients:

2 ziploc bags, one bigger than the other

Milk

Sugar

Vanilla Extract

Salt

Fill the large bag halfway with ice, then add a pinch of salt. Fill the smaller bag with about 1 1/2 or 2 cups of milk (depending on the size of the bag--you want it to be around a third of the way full). Don't use skim or soy milk; the milk needs to have some fat in it to be able to turn into ice cream. Add a few drops of vanilla extract, a couple teaspoons of sugar, and seal the bag TIGHTLY. Place it carefully into the larger bag so that it is surrounded by the ice, and then close the larger bag TIGHTLY.

You might want to put on oven mitts for this next part, as your hands can get quite cold. Gently ';knead'; the bag of ice so that the ice freezes the milk-sugar-vanilla concoction. Keep rubbing the bag of ice between your hands, making sure that the ice is always surrounding the smaller bag. Depending on the fat content of the milk and how cold it's getting, your ice cream should be ready in 5-8 minutes. Simply take the smaller bag out, and empty your ice cream into a bowl to that you can enjoy it!

If you want to add anything else, I would recommend that you add it in after you've finished making the ice cream. It'll be fairly soft, so you can stir in any fruits, nuts, etc. that you want. If you want the ice cream to be a little firmer/more frozen, you could try putting it in the freezer (only for a little while) after you've made it with the bag of ice.

Hope this helps! It's always worked in my experience!
I could be wrong but I'm not aware of any way to make even decent ice cream without some sort of ice cream maker.
